As part of The University of Maryland’s commitment to advance collegiate substance use education, intervention and programs and to eliminate stigma associated with addiction, the University is collaborating with The Haven at College as part of our multifaceted approach to students in, or in need of, recovery. The Haven’s services will supplement the University’s broad range of services, including the Substance Use, Intervention and Treatment (SUIT) program and the student Terps for Recovery organization, to provide a continuum of care to support students struggling with substance misuse and those in recovery.
The Haven at College Park Recovery Residence, a unique “sober living” residential community for students in abstinence based-recovery, launched in Fall 2018 at Terrapin Row. The Haven Recovery Residence is a peer-led, clinically supervised residential community where students help each other navigate early sobriety, identifying with each other’s challenges and sharing successes -- while succeeding in college.
The Haven at College Park Outpatient Center will open in February 2019 across the street from campus on Baltimore Avenue, providing students with evidence-based Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient treatment program to help them address substance use issues in a safe and relatable space while staying engaged in their college experience. The treatment programs are covered by most insurance and are conveniently scheduled in late afternoons, evenings and weekends to accommodate our busy student academic schedules. The Haven at College Park Outpatient Center will also include a student-designed coffee lounge for studying, meeting friends and hanging out in a safe and judgement-free space. All are welcome to the weekly student-led recovery meetings, social events and mindfulness activities that will be hosted here each week.
"The Haven is delighted to partner with the University of Maryland to provide support for students in and seeking recovery from substance use issues," said Holly Sherman, Co-Founder of The Haven at College. "We are excited about collaborating with students and administrators to support the "Terps for Recovery" community, provide outpatient treatment to those who need it, and cultivate a network of peer mentors who lead by example as we smash the stigma of addiction and encourage more students and families to reach out if they need help."
